Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service (TTPrS)

The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is an arm of the Criminal Justice System and a Division of the Ministry of National Security.

MISSION

To protect society and; reduce crime through the reduction in re-offending by facilitating the opportunities for the rehabilitation of offenders, while maintaining control under safe, secure and humane conditions.

VISION

To be a more efficient and effective Prison Service committed to protecting society, adhering to the dictates of the court and reduce re-offending.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

  1. Protect – To protect the public and aid in crime prevention
  2. Correct – Improve educational, work and social life skills of offenders
  3. Relate – Improve community relations
  4. Reintegrate – Promote law-abiding behaviour in custody and after release
  5. Restore – To reduce crime by addressing offending behaviour

PRISON FACILITIES

Port of Spain Prison, Carrera Convict Prison, Golden Grove Prison, Women’s Prison, Remand Prison, Maximum Security Prison, Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre, Tobago Convict Depot. The Youth Training Centre though not a Prison falls under the ambit of the Prison Service and is governed by the Young Offenders Act.

Over 2500 Prison Officers of various ranks are responsible for the operations of the Prison Service.

The Prison Service places great emphasis on their Rehabilitation Programme. The programme is extensive and is designed to provide, among other activities, opportunities in skills training (craft, agriculture and computer literacy), education (from literacy to secondary school), the arts (music and painting) and life coping skills (drug and alcohol rehabilitation, self-awareness, anger management).
