BONNER SPRINGS, Kansas — Today’s groundbreaking kicks off a legacy water project for the City of Bonner Springs. The project led by joint venture team Burns & McDonnell/CAS Constructors will increase water production capacity to 2 million gallons per day to meet current and future demand from residents and businesses and improve water quality by constructing a new membrane softening water treatment plant. The City will receive $2.5 million in principal loan forgiveness to address emerging contaminants through the State Revolving Fund.
While the City has always provided safe drinking water, planning has been underway to replace the aging water plant for many years. Water from the new plant will have improved taste and odor, have less mineral content, and be more efficient for residents’ appliances. Set to come online in late 2024, the plant will not require the City to rely on others for water, providing autonomy for future supply.
“Bonner Springs is a great place to live and own a business,” says Jeff Harrington, mayor of Bonner Springs. “This project fits into our plan for future growth and allows us to provide high-quality water to our residents. In the last two years we’ve secured two growing industrial projects that need a good water supply. This project will benefit those developers and future opportunities.”
The Burns & McDonnell/CAS Constructors team is excited to get started on this important project,” says Dana Weir, project manager at Burns & McDonnell. “We’re using the design-build project delivery method, which reduces schedule, risk and cost by integrating design and construction.”
